I am preparing a PhD in Teaching French as a foreign language, counselled at Paris III by Sophie Moirand and at Nancy II by Francis Carton and Richard Duda.
I am working on the problems that cause the implicits in communication. People use words to talk about things (to inform about things) or to have a social impact on the hearer or to do many other things. The goal is not always clear in the words, language allows us to use secondary paths to achieve our objectives and we are rather better used to deal with this in our mother tongue than we are when we learn a foreign language. I am particularly interested in the troubles by the implicits in oral communication, that is, for non-native speakers, the troubles they have understanding the implicits when they are listening to a native speaker talking to them.
I am trying to get a clear idea of what are the kinds of implicits that exist in oral communication, and which are the kinds that are most troublesome to non-native speakers. The goal would then be to modify the teaching programs so that they include practice to train the learners on those most problematic items of communication.
